Jiu Jitsu

The Jiu Jitsu program started as a way of helping young men on the Mornington Pennisula who were dealing with problems that included unemployment, drug use, low self esteem and demotivation.

From its early days in Mt Eliza, the program has moved to St Stephen’s in Richmond and is planned to open at the Docklands Precinct. It runs on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings from 7.30am.

I have a black belt in Jiu Jitsu, specifically the Machado school developed in Brazil, and have been studying the art for over 20 years. Classes take a small group approach and you can study for your belts and enter competitions.

Benefits from undertaking Jiu Jitsu include:
• Developing a regular routine in your life
• Learning to relate to others
• Building self esteem
• Working with others in a team environment for everybody’s benefit
• Overcoming adversity and retaining control despite frustration
• Seeing things through

The program is currently only available for men, but there are plans to expand the program to include a special female Jiu Jitsu self defence program.
